Just Peachy: Comics about Depression, Anxiety, Love, and Finding the Humor in Being Sad By: Holly Chisholm Published: 2019 by Skyhorse Age Range: Teens, Young Adults Potential Triggers: Anxiety, Depressions, Relationship abuse, Suicidal tendencies, etc. Dewey Location: YA Graphic Novel 616.891663 C "Just Peachy" is a culmination of years of art journaling for author Holly Chisholm. Diagnosed with ADHD, Depression, and Anxiety, Chisholm was encouraged to journal her feelings. Not much of a writer, she decided to draw instead. As someone who has been diagnosed with depression and anxiety, Chisholm's comics spoke to me in a hilarious and relate-able way. Her personification of Depression and Anxiety in the book were entertaining and creative. It's no secret that the teens and young adults of today are under much more stress and scrutiny than ever before. Chisholm's book is a wonderful resource to showcase that the thoughts and feelings the reader may be experiencing are not only "normal", but also felt by so many others as well. I related with so many of the brief illustrations that it became a comical read for me. The illustrations are clean and simple, and delivered in a sort of "Calvin and Hobbes" scenario where some scenes are more panels than others and some are only one image. Chisholm's Instagram is available below by clicking on the Instagram logo. Following are reviews from Library Journal, Publisher's Weekly, and Simon and Schuster, as well as an Amazon link. March: Book One
By: John Lewis, Andrew Aydin Illustrated by: Nate Powell Published: 2013 by Top Shelf Productions Age Range: Teens Potential Triggers: Racism, strong language, violence, death Dewey Location: YA Graphic Novel 323.1196 L
This emotional, unbelievably stunning, heartbreaking account of the civil rights movement from one of the most prominent figures of the movement, who is also a Congressman. March book 1 follows John Lewis' life in rural Alabama, his meeting of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and the saga of civil rights events that he experienced firsthand in the mid-twentieth century including the brutal death of Emmett Till, segregation throughout the United States, and racism at establishments.
March is a vital book for anyone in the twenty-first century to read, if only to realize that these events were not that long ago. Another excellent civil rights book I read a few years back was "Loving" about an interracial couple in Virginia and the hardships they had to overcome in order to simply be married. It astounded me to know that this happened in 1958, the narrow-minded, now unfathomable views that the government had fought with and expressed seemed like something out of the 17 or 1800s, not a mere sixty years ago. This country has dark history when it comes to women's, civil, and LGBT rights among its people. For centuries people in this country have been made to seem less than, belittled, held back, and not given the same level of respect simply for their gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status. Books like March keep the history alive of how far we have come as a nation, but serves as a reminder that there is always room for improvement. History should not be censored or ignored, rather celebrated and commemorated. Awards and Honors

In recent years, "nerd culture" has become accepted into "mainstream" entertainment and literature. Graphic Novel adaptations of literature have also been on the rise from fiction to nonfiction and more. I will continue to add to this post a series of articles as I come across them where graphic novels are the focus. Due to the nature of this blog, these articles and lists will be nonfiction graphic novels.
